MISTAKES THAT COST THE GRADES

CSE 565  GRADE B-
ALGORITHMS
UNKNOWN SUBJECT. SHOULD HAVE TAKEN CSE 465 FIRST. DID NO COLLABORATION ON ASSIGNMENTS. DID BADLY ON THE FIRST MID TERM. SPOILED THE WHOLE SEMESTER.

remedy
do a thorough revision of the algorithms and data structures. get CSE 465 material from GURU.

CSE 543 GRADE B
PISSED PATRICK BADLY. UNKNOWN AREA. STRUGGLED TO READ PAPERS. DID CRAPPY PROJECT. SUBMITTED LATE, WHICH DID NOT HELP. WAS AVERAGE IN THE MID TERM AND THE FINALS. ALSO DID NOT DO WELL IN THE PROGRAMMING ASSIGNMENTS.

remedy
read the GOLLMANN book. read all the papers of the course once again and summarize them. read one paper from Jager's course page daily to prepare for the course in FALL 2009.

CSE 530 GRADE B+
DID NOT SUBMITTED THE SECONG ASSIGNMENT. VIJAY DID NOT CHECK THE FINALS AND THE THIRD ASSIGNMENT.

remedy
read all the material from the course book and also the undergraduate material. Also read the papers and write their summaries.

CSE 511 GRADE A-
THE EXAMS WERE LOP SIDED. DID NOT PAY MUCH ATTENTION TO THE IN CLASS NOTES.

remedy
read the GALVIN and the papers for the course.

CSE 514 GRADE A-
DID BADLY ON FINAL EXAM. MAY BE DOING TOO MUCH BEFORE FINALS. SHOULD HAVE GOT A IN THIS SUBJECT.

remedy
read the KUROSE book again. practice the questions.

CSE 451 GRADE A-
DID AVERAGE ON THE FIRST MID TERM WHICH COST THE A.

The whole story is study daily come what may. Follow all the material on weekly and daily basis. Do well on all the mid terms. Even if one mid term does not go well then it would cost the grade. Do not over work before the final exam. Does not help at all. Maybe tiredness cost some grade. Daily reading is a must.

What to present from your paper

The important thing to present from a paper is high level view of things. You should always have things explained on a broader level than details. Find out the cool things about your project and paper and present them. Leave details for the readers to figure out. Idea is to get readers interested in your paper and make them think more about your work then burdening them with the details of the work.

Also the initial motivation for the work is very important. This should be very clearly explained using an example or something. Idea is again to get people interested in your work.

Never include much detail of your work. Do not get stuck on a single slide for long.

21st May

How you can get connected
Make the effort with family : Ask your family to stay in touch and try to plan regular meetings. If you have more spare time than them, accept that you may have to do more of the running around. Meanwhile, stay in touch with them through phone calls, texts and e-mails.

Get out of the house daily : Even if it’s just to go to the shop, make an effort to go out. Smile at people and make conversation with someone you see regularly. Smiling not only releases feel-good chemicals, but it also attracts people.

Learn a new skill : Learning something new keeps your brain active. Sometimes, it could open up a whole new world.

Exercise : Not only does regular exercise help prevent heart disease and chances of a stroke, it can also slow the progression of Alzheimer’s.

Join a group : If you choose something you’re really interested in — whether it’s walking, reading or music — you’ll instantly find that you’re with like-minded people.

Be a volunteer : People who do voluntary work for two hours a week have lower depression rates and better health than those who don’t.

Get a pet : Owning a pet helps lower blood pressure, boost immunity and ease depression. And walking a dog every day is a great way to get out and meet people.

18th MAY

Had meeting with Patrick. Asked two questions to which I did not have answers

1) Can the WAnD be used for network based intrusion detection or not?
2) What are dynamic translation functions?
3) Undecidability problem of not knowing the actual application behavior.

Useful thing learned tcpdump for monitoring traffic on the machine

5th MAY 2009

Finally got a project after a long time. Its about the Workflow Anomaly Detection system(WAnD). Does not make much sense to me at the moment. Looks like an ordinary piece of crap. No statistics nothing.
